IBDP Chemistry Syllabus
The International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBDP) is a comprehensive two-year program designed to cultivate well-rounded individuals with both extensive and in-depth knowledge.

For students who strive to get into highly competitive university courses such as medicine and dentistry, one must achieve a good grade in HL chemistry (preferably 7) and a high IB score of more than 40 points. Therefore it is highly recommended for students to have an early head start to build a solid foundation in chemistry.
Below is a summary of the topics covered in the DP chemistry syllabus (first assessment 2016):
IB1 (Grade 11)

Unit 1 - Stoichiometric Relationships
Unit 2 - Atomic Structure
Unit 3 - Periodicity
Unit 4 - Chemical Bonding & Structure
Unit 5 - Energetics / Thermochemistry
Unit 6 - Chemical Kinetics
Unit 7 - Equilibrium

Internal Assessment (IA)
Chemistry Extended Essay (EE)*

*Offered to students who fulfill certain requirements (vary from school to school).
IB2 (Grade 12)

Unit 8 - Acids and Bases
Unit 9 - Redox Processes
Unit 10 - Organic Chemistry
Unit 11 - Measurement & Data Processing

Option Topics*
A) Materials
B) Biochemistry
C) Energy
D) Medicinal Chemistry

*Different school will usually select a particular topic for the cohort. Some schools do offer more than one option topics.
New Syllabus
(First Assessment 2025)
The new DP chemistry course was launched in February 2023 for first teaching in August 2023. First assessment will take place in May 2025.
The new chemistry curriculum centers on two main concepts: Structure and Reactivity.

These concepts, subdivided into interconnected topics and subtopics, highlight the relationship where structure influences reactivity and, in turn, reactivity transforms structure.
Below is an overview of the updated syllabus:
Structure refers to the nature of matter from simple to more complex forms
Structure 1: Model of the particulate of matter
Structure 2: Model of bonding and structure
Structure 3: Classification of matter
Reactivity refers to how and why
chemical reactions occur
Reactivity 1: What drives chemical reactions?
Reactivity 2: How much, how fast and how far?
Reactivity 3: What are the mechanisms of chemical changes?
Experimental Programme
1. Practical work
2. Collaborative science projects
3. Scientific investigation
